Building a Destination with Purpose: PCAP Helps Wunderland Resort Take Root in Old Fort

For entrepreneur Shawn Verbrugghe, turning big ideas into reality is nothing new—and neither is partnering with Partner Community Capital (PCAP) to make it happen.

Years ago, Verbrugghe launched Amazing PubCycle, a lively pedal-powered tour company that became a staple of downtown Asheville tourism. When he needed capital to get the business rolling, PCAP was there with flexible financing and hands-on support. He eventually paid off that loan and continued to grow his entrepreneurial footprint across Western North Carolina.

Verbrugghe recently returned to PCAP with a new venture—and an even bigger vision.

Verbrugghe is leading development on Wunderland Resort, a wellness-focused, eco-adventure retreat in Old Fort, North Carolina. Backed by PCAP financing, the first phase of the resort includes land acquisition and infrastructure development for 11 short-term rental units. Wunderland blends forested tranquility with curated outdoor experiences and modern amenities to immerse guests in nature while promoting sustainable living

Situated on 35+ acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Wunderland offers guests a unique balance of adventure and relaxation. The resort’s master plan includes modern cabins, luxury glamping, boutique wellness amenities, hiking and biking trails, outdoor event/yoga spaces, unique outdoor games, and a natural swim pond and cold plunge. Future phases envision a food forest, spa facilities, and artist-in-residence programs. Every element is guided by Verbrugghe’s commitment to regenerative tourism, sustainability, and creating deep connections to the land.

“This project brings together everything I care about—tourism, sustainability, and creating spaces where people can recharge,” said Verbrugghe. “Partner Community Capital believed in my vision for PubCycle, and now they’re helping bring Wunderland to life.”

In addition to Wunderland, Verbrugghe wears several hats: he is the founder of Peech Design & Build, which constructs energy-efficient homes rooted in modern mountain architecture, and he serves as Corporate Sustainability Director at Hot Watt Energy, a company advancing renewable energy solutions.

For PCAP, this partnership reflects its mission in action: supporting entrepreneurs with bold ideas that drive local economies and promote sustainable growth.

“Shawn exemplifies what it means to grow with your community,” said Erika McGilley, Chief Lending Officer at PCAP. “We’re proud to be part of this next chapter and excited to see the impact Wunderland Resort will have in Old Fort and beyond.”

As PCAP celebrates 25 years of making the impossible possible, investments like these highlight the long-term relationships and transformative projects that define the organization’s legacy—and its future.
