New Nonprofit in Mars Hill, NC Launches with Boost from Partner Community Capital

In the heart of Mars Hill, North Carolina, a powerful partnership is taking shape between Partner Community Capital (PCAP) and Remnants Thrift & Sew, a promising new nonprofit startup.

Remnants Thrift & Sew will open a thrift store and host sewing classes, furthering their mission to provide quality clothing to local families, especially those in need. The heart of the building is the new sewing space, which features an “open sew” program for anyone to visit and use the sewing machines for free.

PCAP is providing a crucial $50,000 loan to help launch Remnants Thrift & Sew in Mars Hill. The loan was made through PCAP’s North Carolina Rural Business Builder program, a loan program designed to help entrepreneurs in rural Western North Carolina by providing flexible loan terms and partial loan forgiveness.

“PCAP’s support has been invaluable in propelling us forward,” said Callis Chambliss, Board Chair and Treasurer of Remnants Thrift & Sew. “Their belief in our mission fuels our determination to make a positive impact in our community.”

The loan program is made possible through support from the Dogwood Health Trust and includes an incentive that PCAP forgives 10% of the original loan amount after a predetermined period of successful repayment.

“The loan we provided will be allocated for renovations to the location, in addition to fueling startup operations,” said Spencer Blevins, Business Lender for PCAP’s Western North Carolina region.

Remnants Thrift & Sew is setting up shop in a prime 2400 square foot spot on Carl Eller Rd., strategically positioned along a bustling thoroughfare. The kicker? The space was formerly a dry cleaner, requiring minimal modifications to suit Remnants Thrift & Sew’s needs.

“With 1 out of 5 kids in Madison County living below the poverty line, this initiative holds significant importance,” explained Chambliss. “We are thrilled to offer children’s clothing vouchers in addition to a children’s clothing exchange program to help parents with seasonal swaps,” he added.

In tandem with PCAP’s steadfast support, Remnants Thrift & Sew aims to become a cornerstone of the Mars Hill community, building upon the area’s rich crafting traditions. With PCAP leading the charge, this partnership embodies a commitment to innovation and community empowerment, laying the foundation for a brighter future in Mars Hill and beyond.
