Students Explore Sustainability and Innovation at Caperton Furniture Works with PCAP

Summary

Students from Georgetown Day School’s Policy Institute visited Caperton Furniture Works this month for a hands-on look at sustainable business practices, hosted in partnership with Partner Community Capital (PCAP).

Berkeley Springs, WV — Students from Georgetown Day School’s Policy Institute visited Caperton Furniture Works this month for a hands-on look at sustainable business practices, hosted in partnership with Partner Community Capital (PCAP).

Elizabeth Wilkes, PCAP’s Energy Program Manager, organized the visit, offering students the opportunity to explore how rural manufacturers are integrating efficiency, conservation, and innovation into their operations to create long-term value for their businesses and communities.

Caperton Furniture Works, a long-standing PCAP client, is nationally recognized for its handcrafted hardwood furniture and its commitment to thoughtful, environmentally responsible production. The company prioritizes local sourcing, durable design, and improvements in energy use—making it a standout example of rural entrepreneurship rooted in sustainability.

“This visit brought abstract policy discussions to life,” said Wilkes. “Students see how local businesses are putting values like efficiency, stewardship, and innovation into practice every day. It’s not just about what’s possible—it’s about what’s already happening.”

During the tour, students heard from company leaders and learned how intentional design, local partnerships, and investment in operational improvements are helping small manufacturers thrive while reducing waste and overhead.

“This kind of experience helps students connect the dots between business, the environment, and community well-being,” said Wilkes. “PCAP is proud to support clients like Caperton Furniture Works—businesses that prove you don’t have to choose between doing good and doing well.”

The visit reflects PCAP’s ongoing mission: to provide capital and guidance to entrepreneurs and small businesses that drive sustainable economic growth in underserved and rural areas.
